Project Summary
This was the first major project for Heartwood Projects, and helped crystallize our vision of working collaboratively with local wood professionals to create an impressive forest-to-finish project.
Heartwood Tree Company purchased property bordering the UW Arboretum in 2021 so we could build our own shop and office facility. We dreamed of integrating as much local wood possible, both because it aligns with our mission AND because we knew it would look really great!
Heartwood Projects purchased logs from UW Swap and the Grady Tract in UW-Arboretum in summer of 2021. By January 2022, we were hauling logs to the mill and milling the logs.
After a month of air drying we loaded the lumber up on truck and trailer and delivered it to a local kiln.
The next step in the process was to bring the wood to a local wood shop to turn it into tongue groove and s4s lumber.
Once it was ready we were ready to install it in the shop. The tongue and groove was used for the ceiling and walls, and the beams were used for the ceiling construction.
We also used rough sawn conifer from the Arboretum to clad the shop walls near our work benches.
